BOOKS  He who sells a soul a book Gives that soul a sweeping look Through its pages Down the Ages;

Gives that soul a ship to sail Where the great adventures hail, On the sea Of destiny;

Gives that soul a vision-wide As the skies where stars abide And the far Lone planets are;

Gives that soul great dreams to Dream! Sunlit ways that glint and gleam

 Where great Sages Tramp the Ages!   WILLIAM LE ROY STIDGER

A real book is not one that we read, but one that reads us.   WYSTAN HUGH AUDEN

He who works with his hands is a laborer, He who works with his hands and his head is an artisan,

But he who works with his hands, his head, and his heart is an artist.  LOUIS NIZER

The greatest popular library containing 1058 of the world's best books, past and present. "The Spectator appeared daily from March 1711 to December 1712, and again from June to December 1714. It followed on the closure of Steele's Tatler (q.v.). Collected editions of the Spectator were issued in 1712-15; the Everyman edition gives the text of the collected editions, as edited by C. Gregory Smith in 1897-9, with notes at the end of each volume, and a biographical index and a general index to the whole work. The papers are preponderantly by either Addison or Steele, and the author of each paper is indicated; among the others who contributed are Ambrose Philips (1675-1740) and Eustace Budgell (Addison's cousin 1686-1737). 'The Spectator was the greatest literary triumph of its time,' says the introduction (1956).
