BOOKS  He who sells a soul a book Gives that soul a sweeping look Through its pages Down the Ages;

Gives that soul a ship to sail Where the great adventures hail, On the sea Of destiny;

Gives that soul a vision-wide As the skies where stars abide And the far Lone planets are;

Gives that soul great dreams to Dream! Sunlit ways that glint and gleam

 Where great Sages Tramp the Ages!   WILLIAM LE ROY STIDGER

A real book is not one that we read, but one that reads us.   WYSTAN HUGH AUDEN

He who works with his hands is a laborer, He who works with his hands and his head is an artisan,

But he who works with his hands, his head, and his heart is an artist.  LOUIS NIZER

3 Wood, Mrs. Henry The Shadow of Ashlydyat
London Macmillan & Co. Ltd. 1907 One Hundred and Eightieth Thousand Hard Cover Good No Jacket
"The Shadow of Ashlydyat appeared in instalments in the New Monthly Magazine from September 1861 to 1863. The story of the decline of a family, dishonesty and disaster, has a supernatural element, involving the local legend of a mysterious shadow, and a family curse. Unlike others of Mrs. Henry Wood's stories in which "ghosts" and "appearances" are eventually given a prosaic explanation, The shadow of Ashlydyat is a genuine ghost story. Geographically, the story is based in Mrs. Henry Wood's native Worcestershire, and the town Prior's Ash is reportedly modelled on Bromsgrove. Perhaps this is why the topography of the neighbourhood is more detailed and vivid than in many of her other novels." Literary Heritage "English novelist. Her one surviving novel, East Lynne, was a best seller, and was frequently adapted for the stage. It is the melodramatic but ultimately moral story of an estranged wife who comes back under the guise of governess to her children." Seymour-Smith Very good blue cloth. Some wear, soiling, tanned, torn, endpaper. 1907, 12mo, vii, [1], 475pp. [4 page Mrs. Wood's catalogue bound in]
