EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY # 659 Translated by R. Farquharson Sharp. Introduction by R. Farquharson Sharp. "The Pretenders is a historical-character drama built around the struggle between Haakon and Skule for the crown; it was written before Ibsen left Norway. Pillars of Society was first produced in Copenhagen in 1877 and marked the turning point in Ibsen's work towards the drama of modern social problems. Of Rosmershold, the translator writes:"What is absorbing in the play is the development and conflict of character; the gradual lifting of veil after veil that has concealed Rebecca West's true nature and the extent of her machinations; the pitiless veracity of the self-analysis with which she and Rosmer torture themselves; the master-hand evident in the structure of the play.'"
